Dolly P
Is 40 too old to start a degree in social work?
Asked by Dolly P
Its a 3.5 year course which means I would be 43 when its completed. Are my chances good of actually becoming a social worker at that age?

your chances are great! there is a shortage of social workers, and if it is what you want to do you should absolutely go for it. at 43, you still have 17 years until you retire (sorry!) and social services want people like you that must have some life experience and really want to work in this sector. good luck with it!

A:
no of course not. You are never to old to further yourself. Its good that you are wanting to aim towards something in your life. Your chances of getting work are pretty good, as they will look upon you as wiser and more knowledgeable. Go for it and good luck

You are the only one who can limit yourself. Con. Sanders started approaching people about his fried chicken business around age 62. Sen. McCain is running for the President of these United States of America at his "advanced" age. Senators Clinton and Obama both don't seem to care about their ages. So, what is your excuse?

My Fiancee is a social work student, and the oldest person in her class was 48 when she began the course, so nope, you are not too old!!

I set out on an MBA at the tender!! age of 47 and will finish in 3 years am about to give up as I don't see any point in doing it now. I doubt if anyone will employ me at 50. However I think for social work 43 is not too old, from a purely personal point of view I would say that age = life experience and that the older we are the more judgement and common sense we should have!

My mother was about your age when she entered into her career as a social worker and she did very well in it. The worry that you will have a limited number of years to offer the work should not be a consideration, so many young social workers burn out after a short time, or discover that they really want to do something else.

A:
First of all why do you need to have a degree. To do social work all you need is love for downtrodden ones and heart to help the weaker sect of the society and if you have these two things in you you need not spend three and half years just to have the degree. Your work and contribution to above mentioned sections of the society are more important than a degree. Yes, of course, if you are working in an organisation and you are employed and your progress is depending on your qualifications and degrees then you can go ahead with the degree course. There is no age bar for learning but you shall have to check up with the universities concerned providing the degrees else there may be private institutes too whom you can check with. Why you want the degree you know better.

In one of the current social work courses I teach I have 5 students that are over 40 - so you will probably find that you are not alone in your class. DA
